As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m definitely on-board with the whole concept of watching 3D movies at home. (In fact, just 2 weeks ago, I bought the Disney’s new movie Tangled in 3D, even though I don’t have a 3D TV yet. (I talk about why in my post Reasons to Buy 3D Bluray Movies Now — Even if You Don’t Have a 3D TV.) Now, just as often happens when new technology comes out, it’s just a matter of waiting for the media available for these new devices to catch up.

It happened with the release of the Sony Playstation 3, and it’s happening again with the Nintendo 3DS and 3D TVs. When media devices are first released, there isn’t much media available for them.

So far, there’s only a handful of films available in 3D format. But if they’re films I like, I’m buying them in 3D now–even though I don’t have a 3D TV yet; this way, I won’t have to repurchase them again, later. (Currently, most 3D films on the market are being offered in packages that include a regular DVD, a regular Bluray, AND a 3D Bluray–so when you buy 3D, you get the whole shebang.)

Here, I’ve gone through all the 3D Blurays on the market so far and compiled a handy list for animated film fans. There aren’t many titles available, yet–but I’m looking forward to seeing an increasing number of available titles in the coming weeks and months.

Best Animated 3D Movies | Available as of April 21, 2011

1. Tangled (Disney, 2011) — an awesome film with gorgeous music. My family has already watched this movie three times during the last two weeks.
2. Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga’hoole (2010)– another favorite recent film for my family. Even watching this film in the movie theater, I knew I’d buy the 3D version as soon as it came out on the market. Beautiful graphics–and a moving soundtrack, just like Disney’s Tangled.
3. Alice In Wonderland (Disney, 2010)– beautiful visuals. Despite some criticisms, my son and I enjoyed this film quite a bit. No, the plot’s not complicated–but either was the plot of the original film.
4. Despicable Me (2010)– a fun film that had me literally laughing out loud, even in the movie theater–which is not normal for me! Nice animation, and nice themes to the plot.
5. Monster House (2006)– a slightly older movie, but still an excellent choice for 3D enthusiasts. Very nice animation, and a creative, original plot makes for fun family viewing, although it may frighten younger viewers. Use discretion.
6. Coraline (2009)- I didn’t originally see this movie in the theater, but I later regretted it. Although it has somewhat of an eerie plot, Coraline was a great animated film
