Craving Girl Scout Cookies? This Samoa Substitute is Just as Yummy, but Cheaper | Samoa Copycat Review

We’ve always loved Girl Scout cookies at my house. But the trouble is that Girl Scout cookies are only available for a very short time each year. This means that I end up buying a crazy amount of Girl Scout cookies when they come out–usually a dozen boxes or so–then try to make them last as long as possible. Of course, it never really works: having all those cookies in the house ends up causing us to eat too many cookies, too quickly. (All those boxes of cookies sitting there in the cabinet is just too much of a temptation.)

This weekend, I found a cookie at the grocery store that look almost identical to our favorite Girl Scout cookie, the Samoa. It’s called “Coconut Dreams” by Keebler. They’re described as “Fudge, Caramel, and Coconut Cookies”.

I paid $2.16 for an 8.5 ounce package of Coconut Dreams cookies at the grocery store. I’ve since discovered that these same cookies run $8.47/4-pack on Amazon.com. (That makes the price per 8.5 ounce package $2.13 on Amazon when purchased through Amazon’s Subscribe and Save program.)

The difference between Girl Scout’s Samoas and Keebler’s Coconut Dreams cookies:

  • The chocolate used in Samoas seems to be a bit darker than the chocolate used in the Coconut Dreams.
  • Samoas have a thin layer of caramel inside them, surrounding the cookie; the caramel in the Coconut Dreams is only drizzled on top, as far as I can tell
  • Both Samoas and Coconut Dreams are drizzled with chocolate on top and have a nice layer of chocolate on the bottom.

I’d say the taste/texture match is about 80 percent between these two cookies. The Samoas seem to have more caramel, while the Coconut Dreams seem to have a slightly larger amount of cookie inside.

Buy Coconut Dreams cookies online.
